After falling to the Washington State Cougars in a neutral site Apple Cup matchup last weekend, Jedd Fisch and his Washington Huskies find themselves with an opportunity to bounce back at home this weekend. That's because this weekend Washington will welcome the Northwestern Wildcats to Seattle for UW’s first Big Ten Conference game in program history.

It sucks that the Huskies lost last week, but weird things can happen in rivalry games and those things can be brushed aside in the grand scheme of a season if you respond appropriately.

And with the Huskies entering a new era, there’s no better time than now to move forward and show that you belong in your brand new conference than by getting a win against a longtime member of the Big Ten.

Thankfully, that’s where a very beatable Northwestern Wildcats team comes in.

As the Huskies get set to host the Wildcats at Alaska Airlines Field in Husky Stadium, they find themselves ranked in the top half of the Big Ten and top quarter of the country, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.

ESPN FPI college football rankings: Washington Huskies sit at No. 30 after 2024 Apple Cup loss to Washington State Cougars

With last week’s loss, the Washington Huskies are currently holding the No. 30 spot nationally. There are, of course, over 130 teams that get ranked in this thing. So, that places the Huskies solidly in the top quarter of FBS teams.

That said, it’s not where the Huskies want to be.

Here’s how things break down after Washington’s frustrating loss to Washington State in the 2024 Apple Cup:

  • FPI ranking: No. 30
  • Win-Loss projection: 6.2-5.8
  • Chance of 6+ wins: 66.3 percent
  • Chance of winning Big Ten: 0.6 percent
  • Chance at making College Football Playoffs: 1.5 percent
  • Chance at making it to the National Championship game: 0.1 percent
  • Chance to win the National Championship: 0 percent

That’s not great. It could be worse, sure, but it’s clear that the Huskies have some work to do if they’re going to redeem themselves this season. There’s plenty of time left to make this a successful season and it starts this week as Big Ten play gets under way.
