For the first time this season, the Washington Huskies have lost a game. It took three weeks for Jedd Fisch and the Huskies to come up short, but it happened. And unfortunately, making things worse for Fisch and the Huskies is who they lost to.

Saturday afternoon in Seattle, the Washington Huskies fell to an in-state rival who was certainly looking forward to this matchup. The Huskies ended up losing 24-19 to Washington State in what was a mistake-filled and penalty-plagued Apple Cup

That feels like something of a setback for Fisch and the Huskies as they get this era of Washington Husky football going.

Penalties were a major storyline in this game for the Huskies. Through the first three quarters, Washington ended up committing nine penalties for 95 yards. In total, the Huskies had a remarkably terrifying 16 penalties for 135 yards. UW stalled its own drives and routinely bailed Washington State out.

And that sort of lack of discipline is what helped doom the Huskies. Washington outgained Washington State in total yardage (452 to 381), but penalties and then some truly questionable play calls ended up helping the Cougars come out on top.

Washington Huskies come up short against Washington State in 2024 Apple Cup

As a whole, the offense looked defense, but it’s concerning that the Huskies only put 19 points on the board against a team that allowed Portland State to score 30.

Through the air, Washington’s offense looked pretty good. Will Rogers looked solid, going 23 for 31 and throwing for 314 yards and a touchdown. Giles Jackson was solid as he caught eight passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. They really seem to have a solid connection going.

But UW’s offense struggled when it mattered most.

Late in the fourth quarter, down by five points, the Huskies were able to quickly scamper down the field to get into the red zone before slowing down and facing a 4th and goal from the 2-yard line. But then the Huskies tried to pull off a speed option to the short side of the field and ended up coming up way short.

People are going to question Washington’s ability to perform in tough situations. People are going to question if the Huskies can play a clean game. There are going to be folks who wonder if Washington can keep up in the Big Ten.

If this game is any indicator, this season could be challenging. It’ll be fascinating to see how Fisch and the Huskies respond to this one.
