The Washington Football head coach, Chris Petersen, talks about the season and the upcoming contest with California Golden Bears.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.  At least, that is the hope as the Washington Football team gears up to face the California Golden Bears. California certainly had everyone’s attention when they faced USC in their Pac-12 debut. They arrived at 3-0.  Since that time, they have lost both Pac-12 games. The first to USC, and the second to Oregon.  And so, thanks to their recent struggles, the luster of the Golden Bears is tarnished as they line up to arrive to play the Washington Football team. But head coach Chris Petersen is having none of that.

When Washington Football Coach  Petersen takes the time to talk about the team, the schedule, and the upcoming contest against the California Golden Bears, folks listen. And that is exactly what happened when the coach gave his weekly media briefing.

A good football team

Coach Petersen calls California “a good football team that plays really hard” at the 2:47 mark. Not lip service, Petersen truly understands the strengths of California, and realizes that facing them unprepared could spell disaster for the Huskies on gameday, October 7, 2017.

Petersen goes on to name the California Golden Bears as the “best team we’ve faced”. That is probably both an accurate assessment, but also a smattering of respect for his former Boise State defensive coordinator, California head coach Justin Wilcox. Not only did Wilcox serve under Petersen, he also was the defensive coordinator for the Washington Football team for two years under Steve Sarkisian. Now, the teacher and the student face one another.

It will be an excellent contest

Golden Opportunity

California is still on the upswing. They are rebuilding their program, and are likely following the path cut by the Washington Football program. And why not? It’s proving to be very effective as time moves on. There is no doubt that the California Golden Bears see this week’s contest as a measuring stick of how far they’ve come, and how far they need to go, to be a complete football team.

California is in the Pac-12 norther division, and they’ve run aground of two very good teams in both Oregon and USC. While Washington appears to be the baddest of the bunch from a California perspective, Cal will wind some games this year.

Washington needs this win. Whether you subscribe to the AP or the USA/Coaches poll, the Washington Huskies are at either five or six. Only the top four teams in the nation ascend to the NCAA playoffs. A loss will set the program back to the point where it may not recover in time.  In fact, there is some logic to believe that the Washington Huskies must go undefeated to assure themselves of a playoff bid. Defeating California is a golden opportunity to remain on track.

It should be a great game. Whether home or at the stadium, be sure to don your best purple attire.  At 6-0, the team will continue on track to post-season.
