Washington Basketball Markelle Fultz will likely be the next Husky to play for Philadelphia

Hey Sidney Jones IV and Elijah Qualls! Get the spare bedroom ready. It appears that Washington Basketball point guard Markelle Fultz will likely hear his name called as the first selection of the 2017 NBA Draft.

And it will be the Philadelphia 76ers honor and pleasure to do so.

The Philadelphia 76ers had focused on Fultz throughout the basketball season.  He is a backcourt dynamo, able to run an offense or play off-ball.  And after selecting Ben Simmons as the top selection of the 2016 NBA Draft, that is exactly what they need.

2017 NBA Lottery

But there was a little matter of the NBA Lottery.  You recall that the results of that lottery placed the top pick into the hands of the Boston Celtics.  And by all accounts, the Celtics looked to draft Fultz and never look back.

More from Basketball

But the good fortune for the Celtics was misfortune for Markelle Fultz. Incredibly talented, his skillset aligned with those already on the Boston Celtics roster.  It created opportunity to debate whether the Celtics would be better served to trade the rights to Fultz.

In the end, events began to unravel for Fultz to Boston when he did not have a great workout there. Afterwards the Fultz family agreed to work out for the Los Angeles Lakers. That scenario forced Boston’s hand to contact the Philadelphia 76ers, an NBA team with a documented interest in Fultz.

Deal Done

Now, a deal is in place. The announcement of the particulars will likely happen Monday.

In the end, Markelle Fultz will travel to Philadelphia much like Sidney Jones IV and Elijah Qualls. He will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact on a young and incredibly talented roster. And he will be the first overall pick in the NBA Draft, a personal goal he had set for himself years ago.
