When you click on the link, you are taken to the page document format (.pdf) roster which lists returning places at the top and incoming freshman in the bottom.  The timing of the release coincides to the start of spring football training.

Jake Browning Update

Now, we know that quarterback Jake Browning had surgery and is still in the process of recovering.  Per research, Browning will likely be building flexibility and strength in his shoulder though the end of July 2017.

And so, that leaves more work to share among his backups: sophomore Tony Rodriguez and freshman Jake Haener.

But the spring football season is upon us. And that means a quick pivot from winter sports to the gridiron.  It means we talk about who has arrived this year, who has departed for the NFL,  and who is returning to the team.

Defensive Backs

But the burning question in everyone’s mind is the Washington Huskies defensive backfield. After all, the NFL is in the process of scooping up safety Budda Baker, and cornerback Sidney Jones IV as well as Kevin King. Those are some incredibly talented shoes to fill. Head coach Chris Petersen could attempt to motivate his young defenders by pointing out the height of the mountain each player must climb.

"“There’s always going to be a group on your team, if only one, that really needs to step. We’ve had an experienced group there (at defensive backfield) the last couple years and the cycle of graduation hits you. So it’s an exciting time. It’s exciting for them. (And) It’s exciting for us. (But it’s espeically) exciting for Coach Lake to see what he can do with these guys.” – Coach Peterson as interviewed over defensive back situation"

Instead, he remains confident and calm:

Shine indeed.

Adam Jude Just As Confident

Adam Jude of the Seattle Times has published an excellent primer on the status of the Washington Huskies’ defensive backfield.  In his piece, he lists the projected depth chart at each position.  It’s worth the time to check out.

He exudes the same level of confidence as shown by Coach Petersen:

"That’s a lot of talent to lose at once, and there’s reason for concern about what happens next. Then again, co-defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake has stacked more young talent in the secondary than the Huskies have anywhere else on the roster, so there’s reason for optimism, too."

In short, there are plenty of talented defensive backs on the Washington Huskies, each eager to earn the starting role.
