It looks like the Washington Huskies are bulking up a bit in their defensive front. Pass rush was a bit of a problem for UW this season, especially in Big Ten play, so it’s great to see that Jedd Fisch and the Huskies went out and added Caleb Smith to the 2025 Washington Huskies recruiting class.

A lot of the Huskies’ recruiting efforts will be centered around talent that is grown and developed out on the West Coast. Being a regional team makes a lot of sense for this program.

That said, it’s encouraging that the Washington Huskies are able to dip down into the South and pick up a talented pass rusher like Smith, who is from Birmingham, Alabama, to further improve the defensive front. With all the issues that UW had in the front seven this past season, getting the best available players matters for the Huskies.

It’s fun to recruit nationally, right?

Smith weighs in at 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds and is bringing some fascinating versatility and athleticism to Washington’s front seven.

During his high school career, Smith played at both defensive end and tight end from his junior year at Gardendale High before finishing things up at Parker High School as a senior, where he went 13-1 and helped his team to a state championship appearance. During that senior season, Smith racked up 44 tackles and eight tackles for loss.

That should excite Washington Husky fans.

Smith was ranked as the No. 38 prospect in the state of Alabama and he ended up choosing to come play in Seattle instead of staying closer to home. Washington’s recruiting efforts for Smith were led byJason Kaufusi and Mondo Hawkins.

As he picked to come play for the Huskies, Smith chose UW over offers from the Memphis Tigers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Arkansas Razorbacks, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Louisville Cardinals, Missouri Tigers, Tulane Green Wave, UCF Knights, West Virginia Mountaineers (and more).
