ESPN FPI favors Washington vs. Northwestern as Huskies try to bounce back in week 4

The Washington Huskies need to bounce back after a disappointing loss to the Washington State Cougars. ESPN's FPI seems to think the Huskies can get a win against Northwestern this week. That seems fair.

Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies could use a little bit of redemption after a frustrating showing in the 2024 Apple Cup. Last week’s loss to the Washington State Cougars put an end to an unbeaten season for the Huskies as they make the move from the Pac-12 and into the Big Ten.

Well, today we get to see Washington’s first conference game in their new conference as they host the Northwestern Wildcats for the Huskies’ Big Ten home opener. And even with Washington’s loss last weekend, it seems like they should be able to come out on top in this contest.

While Washington has certainly looked a little bit flawed at various times this season, the Huskies haven’t been quite as bad as Northwestern has looked to get the season started. This is a great chance for Washington to get another win and to move on from the Apple Cup a bit.

And if you ask ESPN’s Football Power Index and their matchup predictor, you’ll find that UW has a great shot to win this one.

ESPN’s FPI is giving the Huskies a bit of an overwhelming edge when stacked up against the Wildcats this weekend.

ESPN FPI: Washington Huskies heavily favored against Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten home opener

There’s absolutely no guarantee that Washington will win, but right now, ESPN’s FPI has the Huskies with an 84.1 percent chance of coming out on top of the Northwestern Wildcats. I don’t know about you, but I feel pretty good with that.

It’ll be worth keeping an eye on how the Huskies respond to last week’s loss. They were plagued by penalties all throughout the game. If they can keep their emotions level and play disciplined football, then maybe we’ll see Washington get an easy win here.

We’ll see. Northwestern’s defense has been pretty good and the Huskies will need to ensure that their offense is able to get into the end zone more than just once, which they were unable to do last weekend.
