Washington Huskies still in top half of Big Ten after losing to WSU, according to FPI

The Washington Huskies may have lost a frustrating game in the Apple Cup, but they're still holding a decent spot in the Big Ten, according to ESPN's FPI.

Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies are still in the top half of their new conference, according to the latest ESPN FPI rankings. That isn’t exactly something huge worth bragging about, but it is noteworthy given how last week Fisch and the Huskies fell short of beating the Washington State Cougars in the 2024 edition of the Apple Cup.

And while it’s not a bad thing that Washington is ranked in the top half of the Big Ten in ESPN’s FPI rankings right now, it’s worth noting that the Huskies are barely sitting there and they could very easily lose that spot if they aren’t careful.

At the moment, when looking at things from a national perspective, Washington holds the No. 30 spot overall in the latest ESPN FPI rankings. And how does that stack up against the rest of the Big Ten conference?

Well, Washington is sitting at No. 9 in the Big Ten, according to the current ESPN FPI college football rankings.

That’s a tricky spot to be at the moment. Here’s how the Big Ten looks, according to ESPN’s FPI:

  • Ohio State Buckeyes - No. 3
  • Penn State Nittany Lions - No. 9
  • Oregon Ducks - No. 11
  • USC Trojans - No. 12
  • Indiana Hoosiers - No. 19
  • Michigan Wolverines - No. 21
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers - No. 25
  • Maryland Terrapins - No. 28
  • Washington Huskies - No. 30
  • Iowa Hawkeyes - No. 32
  • Minnesota Golden Gophers - No. 43
  • Illinois Fighting Illini - No. 46
  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights - No. 47
  • Michigan State Spartans - No. 62
  • Wisconsin Badgers - No. 65
  • UCLA Bruins - No. 80
  • Northwestern Wildcats - No. 83
  • Purdue Boilermakers - No. 89

The Ohio State Buckeyes are at the top (no shocker there) with the Penn State Nittany Lions coming in second for the Big Ten. Then there’s a couple of former Pac-12 teams in the Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans hanging out right next to each other.

The Indiana Hoosiers have been a surprising bunch and are holding down the No. 5 spot in the Big Ten and No. 19 spot nationally. We’ll see if that’s something they can sustain down the course of the season.

Michigan comes in at No. 21 nationally and No. 6 in the Big Ten after giving up 18 points to the Arkansas State Red Wolves (A-State scored twice late in that game, but still, that’s a little weird). Nebraska holds the No. 25 spot overall and No. 7 spot in the conference. After that, there’s the Maryland Terrapins at No. 28 and No. 8 nationally and in the conference respectively.

And then there’s Washington, sitting at No. 30 in the nation, according to ESPN’s FPI college football rankings. The Huskies are holding the No. 9 spot in their new conference, which isn’t great, but it’s in the top half of this absolutely massive new Big Ten. So, it could be worse.

The Huskies have some work to do after that loss in the 2024 Apple Cup. If they can take care of business this weekend as Big Ten play begins, then maybe we see them move up a bit.
