Big Ten football standings, records after Washington Huskies beat Northwestern in conference opener

Fun fact: Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies have quite literally never been beaten in Big Ten play.

Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies may not have made major waves and headlines in their Big Ten opener, but they did get back in the win column as they got a much-needed win over Northwestern.

Oh, and the Huskies are currently tied to be at the top of the Big Ten football standings (focusing just on conference games at the moment, folks).

That’s not insignificant.

While Northwestern is far from being a powerhouse program, the Wildcats do have a good defense and Washington was able to get a solid 19-point win on Saturday. And as a result, the Huskies are now 1-0 in Big Ten play (and 3-1 overall).

But how does the rest of the Big Ten look?

Well, interestingly enough, some of the prominent brands in the Big Ten suffered some early conference losses. The USC Trojans just lost to the Michigan Wolverines and the Nebraska Cornhuskers fell to the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Oh, speaking of Illinois, Bret Bielema’s bunch and the Indiana Hoosiers are sitting at the very top of the conference as they both are 1-0 in Big Ten play and are 4-0 overall. College football is kinda weird this season.

Big Ten standings after Washington Huskies handled Northwestern Wildcats

At the moment, here’s what the Big Ten standings look like:

  • Illinois Fighting Illini: 1-0 (conference), 4-0 (overall)
  • Indiana Hoosiers: 1-0, 4-0
  • Iowa Hawkeyes: 1-0, 3-1
  • Michigan Wolverines: 1-0, 3-1
  • Michigan State Spartans: 1-0, 3-1
  • Washington Huskies: 1-0, 3-1
  • Maryland Terrapins: 0-1, 3-1
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers: 0-1, 3-1
  • USC Trojans: 0-1, 2-1
  • Minnesota Golden Gophers: 0-1, 2-2
  • Northwestern Wildcats: 0-1, 2-2
  • UCLA Bruins: 0-1, 1-2
  • Ohio State Buckeyes: 0-0, 3-0
  • Oregon Ducks: 0-0, 3-0
  • Penn State Nittany Lions: 0-0, 3-0
  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights: 0-0, 3-0
  • Wisconsin Badgers: 0-0, 2-1
  • Purdue Boilermakers: 0-0, 1-2

When looking at the conference records, there is currently a six-way tie for claiming the lead in the Big Ten at the moment. That won’t last for very long. Things will change sooner rather than later, but it’s nice to see the Huskies included in that grouping.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Huskies move forward. This week they’ve got Rutgers, who could present an unexpected challenge. Later this season, Washington will play the likes of the Oregon Ducks, Michigan Wolverines, USC Trojans, and Penn State Nittany Lions.
