Michael Penix Jr.'s return gives new life to Atlanta Falcons' offense

Former Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. took the field for the first time this season on Thursday night, and things are already turning around for his Atlanta Falcons. The Dirty Birds overwhelmed the hosting Green Bay Packers with newfound offensive firepower to secure a crucial 35-14 victory and prevent an 0-3 start.

Though the Falcons won, Penix’s first drive since last year’s midseason ACL tear didn’t end well. On a first-and-10 passing down at Green Bay’s 49-yard line, the former Huskies legend hesitated, then threw an ugly interception straight into the arms of former All-Pro Packers safety Xavier McKinney.

Despite that early adversity, Penix and the Falcons’ offense soon began to heat up. Elite running back Bijan Robinson was nearly unstoppable, finishing with 29 carries for 194 yards and two touchdowns. And as Robinson began wearing down Green Bay’s defense, Penix began to find his stride.

After completing just two of seven pass attempts for 22 yards in the first quarter, the former Washington Husky quickly transformed into a near-perfect game manager. Across the final three quarters, he completed 16 of 18 pass attempts for 234 yards and one touchdown, which came on a five-yard dart to tight end Austin Hooper just before halftime.

Penix didn’t score otherwise, but he spent most of Thursday night doing exactly what a quarterback is supposed to: Getting the ball to his best players. When he wasn’t handing the ball off to one of two Robinsons–Brian Robinson Jr. finished 10-50-1–Penix was slinging it downfield to star Falcons wideout Drake London.

London finished Thursday night’s game with nine catches–including six on six second-half targets–for a career-best 194 receiving yards. Such a performance in Penix’s season opener will surely encourage Falcons fans, who saw London record 100+ receiving yards in five of the last six games he played with the former Heisman finalist.

Atlanta’s dominant rushing attack may have won the day for the Falcons, but it will likely be Penix’s strong showing that drives fan optimism into Week 4’s NFC South clash against the New Orleans Saints.

Penix’s strong return signals much-needed stability in Atlanta

Atlanta’s quarterback situation has been bizarre since 2023, when the Falcons drafted Penix at No. 8 overall despite having just agreed to pay Kirk Cousins $180 million across four seasons. Penix took over for the since-departed veteran after less than one full season, but only started 12 games before last season’s Week 11 ACL tear.

With Penix on the mend to begin the '26 season, the Falcons turned to oft-maligned free agent passer Tua Tagovailoa, but the former Miami Dolphin’s chances of starting disappeared following a back injury he suffered during a Sept. 10 practice.

Tagovailoa’s replacement, career backup Cooper Rush, recorded a dismal quarterback rating (QBR) of just 5.1 in Atlanta’s Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh. Rush was then benched after starting Week 2 equally poorly (6.0 QBR), and fourth-stringer Jack Strand couldn’t do much better (12.3) after watching his first pass returned for a defensive touchdown. The two’s combined statline of 18/32 for 129 yards and three interceptions was a major factor in Atlanta’s 34-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers, which sent the Falcons into Week 3 with an 0-2 record and a -38 point differential.

Penix’s victorious return, which earned a QBR of 84.5 and made him Atlanta’s leading passer through three weeks, was certainly made easier by Robinson’s dominant rushing ability, but there’s no question that the Falcons are better when their starting quarterback is healthy. 

The Dirty Birds are just 1-2, and still have plenty of work to do this season, but there’s more hope in Atlanta now than there's been since Penix’s injury. Now, with his health back and a strong supporting cast at his side, the former Washington Husky may finally be headed for an NFL breakout.
