Danny Sprinkle's vision is crumbling in front of him with latest freshman transfer

That 2025 recruiting class is all sailing away.

A year ago, Danny Sprinkle sold himself, the fans, the athletic department, and other players the vision of a young core. This young core would help shape the program's future. Which felt like a big ask, even then, as the NIL transfer portal era has made it impossible to keep a group intact. Now, we are watching it unravel in front of our eyes with JJ Mandaquit joining Courtland Muldrew in the transfer portal.

Mandaquit got injured about midway through the year and was unable to return, but he looked like the point guard of the future for the Huskies. A player who could ham and egg with Zoom Diallo and could find open teammates in rare ways. Yet, now he's planning to leave, and the young group Sprinkle brought in is probably all gone.

Let's look back at that young group that he brought in last offseason. It consisted of Hannes Steinbach, JJ Mandaquit, Jasir Rencher, and Courtland Muldrew. If you want, you can add Nikola Dzepina as part of that group, though it doesn't fit as cleanly in the recruiting class as he came in a little differently.

Steinbach is most likely going to the NBA. Mandaquit and Muldrew are now in the portal. Rencher may have a heart condition that keeps him out of basketball completely. That's not good for Sprinkle's vision.

With the group of Zoom Diallo, Lathan Sommerville, Wesley Yates III, and Bryson Tucker all going to be juniors next season, it's hard to say that's part of the young core vision.

To make matters worse, Sprinkle has zero recruits coming in 2026's recruiting class. Sure, there's buzz that Sprinkle may be going all-in for Tyran Stokes, but it still feels like a pipe-dream and unrealistic. That means that Sprinkle will have to field another team using the transfer portal, and that young core vision has completely evaporated.
