While everyone has been focused on the Washington football wide receiver room, they have missed a secret star in Tight End Jack Westover.
Originally a walk-on player, sixth-year senior Jack Westover has set out to prove his worth. Westover had only played two games of football in High School before he decided to be a walk-on player at the University of Washington. He initially was positioned to be a fullback on the Huskies offense but his versatility has allowed him to expand his role.
Westover started to have a more prominent role in DeBoer’s offense in 2022 and was shaping up to have an even better year in 2023. I said before the season that Westover would be a name to watch for the Huskies this season and that has certainly held.
In the season opener against Boise State, Westover had five receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. He only followed that up with one reception for 11 yards in Week 2 against Tulsa but had three receptions for three touchdowns in the first half against Michigan State.
Washington knew the Spartans would try and keep tight on Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan so targeting Westover was smart. Although, Michigan State wasn’t able to hold back Odunze and McMillan as they had eight receptions for 180 yards and four receptions for 96 yards, respectively.
It really doesn’t matter if the opposing defenses know what’s coming from the Washington football offense, they can’t seem to stop them. Opponents thought they only had to worry about stopping the wide receivers but now they have another threat ahead of them with Westover.
