Washington football now has four commits in the 2022 class (two of them on Saturday) and three are from the same Nevada high school!

Washington football is making a name for itself in Nevada. More specifically, at one of the state’s elite football programs, Liberty High School. Earlier on Saturday, defensive tackle Sir Mells made his commitment to join Jimmy Lake’s squad, and just three hours later, his teammate Anthony Jones announced his intentions to join Mells in Seattle. And don’t forget that the first commit in the 2022 class, four-star wide receiver Germie Bernard, also attends Liberty.

Jones, who is listed as a tight end, will be making the move to defense at the college level. In Pete Kwiatkowski’s scheme, he’ll play outside linebacker, and should be utilized in the same mold as Joe Tryon. At close to 6’5, and 240 pounds, Jones has the prototypical body type for the Tryon role, and will continue to grow and put on weight at the college level. He has great bend off the edge, and in time should be a high-impact pass rusher.

After taking four trench guys in the 2021 cycle (five if the Huskies can land J.T. Tuimoloau), Lake is showing that he wants to build through the trenches. Expect the team to take one more player at the position, and the top target is probably four-star Nate Burrell out of St. John Bosco (Calif.).

There’s a possibility they take three players at outside linebacker, but that’s only if they can get in the mix for another Nevada target, top 50 overall player out of Nevada’s other elite program, Bishop Gorman, Cyrus Moss. Lake is doing everything in his power to pull as many great players from Nevada as he can, and he proved that by offering 2023 four-star wide receiver Zachariah Branch out of Gorman. Branch’s brother Zion is a top 100 overall player at safety in the class of 2022, and would be a massive get for the Huskies. Lastly, there’s four-star cornerback Fabian Ross, who’s also at Bishop Gorman.

The class of 2022 looks like it’s going to be about two things. First, keeping all the elite talent from the state of Washington at home, and second, establishing a pipeline in the state of Nevada, which Lake and his staff are very clearly doing.

Jones is a huge piece of that puzzle, and when he gets his opportunity to shine at Washington, he’s going to make the most of that opportunity.

Congratulations to Anthony for making his commitment, and we can’t wait to see him play in purple and gold!
