Salvon Ahmed driving Washington Football’s optimism up in one day of practice
By Bret Stuter
Washington Football’s all-purpose back Salvon Ahmed is turning heads. He is a fleet-footed rookie. In fact, he is undeniably quick to the line. Now, how will the Huskies get him onto the field?
Washington Football rookie Salvon Ahmed is part running back, part wide receiver, but apparently part Cheetah as well. At least, that is the impression he is leaving on coaches and media after a day of practice. Despite day one, many are already singing his praises. On the other hand, he left others tongue-tied as they try to capture the sheer joy of watching his incredible burst through the holes.
Sure, it’s just day one. Sure it’s without pads. But the excitement this young man generates is electrifying.
Keep in mind that Salvon Ahmed is the highest rated recruit on the team from the 2017 class. He hails out of Kirkland Washington, and stands 5-foot-11 and weighs in at 189 pounds. Now for the rest of the story.
He is too good to bench
There is always a struggle to find playing time for a rookie on the Washington Football team. This is a team with layered depth. Starters prepared to start for several years. The offense is poised for a breakout year. The Huskies boast a nearly intact offensive line, two returning wide receivers, quarterback, and outstanding running back. For all intents and purposes, this offense will score plenty of points for purple this year. Until now, the starting offense appeared set.
But Salvon Ahmed may change that. He is fast enough for running back and sure handed enough for wide receiver.
But with so much talent already on this team, why try to make room? He appears to be worth the effort. He fits the billing as a fast running back, whose deceptive speed will chew up huge gains against a defense.
Fast enough to play wide receiver as well
But he also has skills to line up outside as a wide receiver. In those matchups, he will win the battle to the ball. And once that happens, he kicks in the jets and its a race to the endzone.
Ahmed won’t win a starting position for game one. But he will be part of the offensive packages. Flooding the defense with downfield receiving threats. Lining up as a slot receiver who can also sweep back around as a runner. Even to come in and give the starters a breather without losing offensive momentum.
