UW Recruiting: Sam Cassell Jr.

Sam Cassell Jr. is not a new face on the UW radar, we have known about him since the summer. He had planned to take a visit to Washington in September but as far as I know that visit didn’t happen and Cassell Jr. slowed down his recruiting as much as possible. He backed off a lot not just from Washington but from recruiting in general and took the time to focus on his upcoming and now current season.

This led to rumors that maybe Cassell Jr. or Washington or both were no longer that interested in each other, this however, is not the case. Coach Raphael Chillious was at the National Prep Showcase last weekend and saw Cassell Jr. play and UW still wants this 6’6 point guard.

Baltimore Sun has him listed as one of the top players in the state and stated that he recently took an official visit to Maryland.

From what I have seen his intangibles are off the charts. He can shoot with consistency from 3, he has the ability to attack the rim, and he can distribute the ball.

At the National Prep Showcase he had a real good turnout and put himself on the map. His best game was when he had 30 points against New Hope. In fact, he was held to 30 when he fouled out late in the game.

He talked with Adam Zagoria from Zagsblog.com after the game and there are a couple tidbits to take from it.

"A Baltimore native, Cassell Jr. listed Nebraska, Maryland, Florida State and Washington among schools that have offered.Cassell Jr. also described Washington as being “very involved.” Assistant coachRaphael Chillious was on hand Saturday.Mostly, Cassell Jr. wants “an up-tempo system where the coach will let the guards play.”“There’s a lot of schools that are recruiting me that let their guards play,” he said."

Terpinsider.com says that Maryland is in the lead.

"He still has Maryland at the top of his list with the Terps looking to sign another guard for next season during the spring signing period."

This is probably due to the fact that Cassell has actually taken an official visit to Maryland. He doesn’t plan to decide anytime soon but instead will even allow other schools to get into the mix but for now Washington is involved and has been for awhile.

Stay tuned.
