Scoring 42 points in a row is a fun thing, right? I, for one, greatly appreciate when the Washington Huskies manage to pummel an opponent and score 42 points in a row. And hey, it’s even better when that happens in a rivalry game! And you know what makes it even more fun?
Well, when the Huskies also technically complete a comeback to get a win in the process.
And that’s exactly what happened when the Washington Huskies took on the Oregon Ducks back in 2003. UW, down by double digits (technically speaking) early against the Oregon Ducks and Mike Bellotti, mounted a comeback that included scoring the next 42 points in this game, holding Oregon out of the end zone for the remainder of the game, and winning by 32 points.
What a fun game. For Washington, that is. The Ducks probably didn’t have anywhere near as much fun in this one.
Exploring the most dominant wins in Washington Husky football history since 2000: Beating Oregon by 32 points is pretty fun, let’s do it again some time
Check out some fun facts surrounding Washington’s win against the Ducks (and the remainder of UW’s season) back in 2003:
- Score: Washington Huskies 42 vs. Oregon Ducks 10
- Margin of Victory: 32 points
- Coaches: Keith Gilbertson vs. Mike Bellotti
- Washington's leading passer: Casey Paus (5-8, 117 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 267.9 rating)
- Washington's leading rusher: Shelton Sampson (6 carries, 131 yards, 21.8 avg, 3 TDs)
- Washington's final record: 6-6
- Washington's bowl destination: None
What a game for Casey Paus and Shelton Sampson. Truly remarkable stuff from those two.
How did Washington absolutely annihilate the Oregon Ducks in 2003?
I really don’t think it’s all that often that a team will be down by double digits (10 points, but still) after the first quarter and then follow that up by scoring 42 unanswered points to get a 32-point win against a rival. Something tells me that just doesn’t happen much.
What’s interesting is that Washington really had that burst of scoring in the second half. The first half ended with the score set at 10-7 in Oregon’s favor. Thank goodness for that second half and the 35 points that followed.
The Huskies managed to avoid committing turnovers. That helped them win. UW also happened to hold the Ducks to just 73 rushing yards while the Huskies gained over 260 yards on the ground. That’s a really solid way to get a win here.
