Washington's latest commit gives the Huskies a serious recruiting edge in 2028

Chaz Gray's commitment is a nice addition to UW's 2027 class, and gives the Huskies a great shot at landing his highly-rated younger brother.

The Washington Huskies landed the latest in a string of recent commitments on Tuesday afternoon, when three-star edge rusher Chaz Gray committed to the Huskies. Gray’s a solid pickup for an already strong 2027 UW recruiting class, but that’s not the only reason his commitment should excite Husky fans.

Gray is a physically imposing two-sport athlete out of Montvale, N.J., where he plays defensive end and power forward for St. Joseph Regional High School. He currently stands 6-foot-4 and  250 pounds, but his long, athletic frame will likely give him room to bulk up if need be. As a result, he’s got enticing versatility along the defensive line, where he’s currently developing a pass-rush arsenal to complement his evident run-stopping skills.

Gray’s ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 36 edge, and the No. 9 player in New Jersey’s 2027 class. He’s the 18th commit–and fifth defensive lineman–to join a Huskies class which ranks No. 19 nationally according to 247Sports Composite.

He ultimately chose the Huskies–who gave him his first Power Four offer in Feb. 2025–over Tennessee, Clemson, and UCF. He has reportedly shut down his commitment, and has cancelled his upcoming visits with the Vols and Tigers.

Chaz’s brother Tahj Gray is Rivals’ No. 1 linebacker in 2028

Chaz’s commitment to UW deserves to be celebrated in its own right, but it’s difficult to ignore what it could mean for the Huskies in 2028. Chaz’s younger brother Tahj is a consensus-five star prospect in the Class of 2028, where he’s currently ranked by On3’s Rivals as the nation’s No. 1 linebacker and No. 32 overall player.

The two brothers were together for Chaz’s official visit to Montlake on May 29, where Chaz experienced more of the “all-around love and genuine interest” which he told SeaTown Sports set the Huskies apart from other schools.

Tahj, who already stands 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, was likely also present for the two in-home visits which Washington made in May. Linebackers coach Brian Odom visited the Gray house on May 9, and director of player personnel Jacob Crawford made a visit on May 22.

Those three visits have already earned the Huskies a commitment from Chaz, but they could be paramount to landing Tahj in 2028. The younger Gray brother has likely already gotten a full in-person pitch from head coach Jedd Fisch and his recruiting staff, who should rightly be keen to develop rapport with the young five-star.

The Gray brothers have already combined for a 2025 New Jersey Non-Public A state championship, which they won by defeating then-undefeated Don Bosco Prep inside MetLife Stadium. Their title-winning season also included a 31-14 win over Huskies true freshman quarterback Derek Zammit, whose DePaul Catholic Spartans were held to just 119 passing yards and 11 first downs.

Keeping the Gray brothers together would be a huge victory for the Huskies, and it’s an outcome which appears increasingly likely following Chaz’s commitment. The Huskies, who actually offered Tahj five days before offering Chaz, are getting closer to securing a major win for their 2028 recruiting class.
