Look, as we’ve explored the quirkiness of long runs without touchdowns throughout the history of the Washington Husky football program, we’ve seen some interesting tidbits of real recent history for UW. That includes guys like Myles Gaskin and Deontae Cooper and Chris Polk. Those are recent games.
Now we’re going to go back in time over five decades and talk about John Brady, who managed to make his way onto this list with the No. 5 spot as he had the chance to record one of Washington’s longest non-scoring runs in program history.
And he did it despite not really being known as someone who would run the ball for the Huskies. Let’s take a look at Brady’s spot in the Washington Husky football record book as he ran for 73 yards against the Navy Midshipmen.
Washington Husky football history: Long live John Brady’s 73-yard run that took place against Navy all the way back in 1970
I’m sure there are UW fans who distinctly remember this game. I don’t. I wasn’t alive then. A lot of people weren’t. But, if you weren’t there or didn't know about this quirky stat, Brady managed to run for 73 yards (but no touchdown) against the Navy Midshipmen on October 3, 1970.
But, again, Brady didn’t really do much running. Throughout the entirety of this season, he had 15 carries.
From what I can tell by digging around and doing some research, Brady was typically used as a tight end or a receiver. Running? Well, not typically in the job description for those guys. So, this was a big deal.
He only had 15 carries for a grand total of 199 yards all throughout the season. This one carry equaled out to be well over one-third of his rushing yards from the 1970 season. Shoutout to John Brady.
Oh, and it is worth noting that this came in a huge win for the Huskies. Washington managed to beat Navy 56-7 in this game.
