When the Washington Huskies meet up with the Louisville Cardinals, the Huskies are going to be facing a team that caused a few headaches for folks in the ACC. This is a Louisville team that won eight games, including a win over the Clemson Tigers, and was involved in some really close matchups with the likes of the SMU Mustangs, Miami Hurricanes, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

If you didn’t already notice, there are a few College Football Playoff contenders on that list. The Cardinals made life difficult for some solid programs this season. Jeff Brohm has a good thing going with Louisville. I mean, Louisville was a pretty solid team this season and one that Washington can’t really afford to take lightly.

And it shouldn’t catch anyone off guard that the Cardinals had a really solid season because there are some fascinating and talented athletes on their roster. But, thankfully (for Washington’s sake, that is), a few of those Louisville Cardinals stars will be sitting out of the 2024 Sun Bowl.

That includes Ashton Gillotte.

Louisville Cardinals star defensive end Ashton Gillotte to sit out of 2024 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl vs. Washington Huskies

Gillotte, a talented defensive end who recorded 4.5 sacks and was consistently a disruptive force up front for the Cardinals defense all throughout this past season, has made the choice to opt out of the bowl game between Louisville and Washington.

Instead of travelling to El Paso to play against the Huskies, Gillotte has made the choice to focus on preparing for the NFL Draft. That should certainly make life a good bit easier for Washington Huskies freshman quarterback Demond Williams Jr., who will be making the second start of his college career against Louisville.

To some degree, it makes sense that Gillotte is sitting out. He’s likely sensing that competing against Washington wouldn’t really do much to enhance his draft stock more than what he’s already accomplished on the field so far this season, even if it is another data point for NFL teams to consider.
