There’s no better way to wrap up 2024 than with a solid win over a conference opponent. That’s exactly what Tina Langley and the Washington Huskies women’s basketball team did on New Year’s Eve as they hit the road for Champaign, Illinois and came away with an impressive nine-point road victory.

In the State Farm Center, Washington advanced to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play thanks to a well-rounded offensive effort that helped overcome the herculean performance from Illinois’ Genesis Bryant who put up 32 points in the loss.

Sayvia Sellers led the Huskies as she scored 24 points and she was dangerous from deep. Sellers managed to hit five of the seven three-pointers she attempted in the 40 minutes that she played. To go along with that, Sellers also dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.

Dalayah Daniels managed to record a double-double as she scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds of her own (four of which were offensive rebounds, which was more than any other player grabbed in the game).

The Huskies were largely beneficiaries of Illinois’ mistakes. The Fighting Illinis had 14 turnovers, which Washington was able to turn into 25 points. Interestingly enough, Washington also had 14 turnovers, but Illinois couldn’t do much with that and only managed to get 17 points off turnovers.

The Huskies were incredibly solid in shooting as they managed to hit on 54.8 percent of their shots from their field and 55 percent of their shots from three-point range. Illinois, on the other hand, wasn’t anywhere near as efficient, making just 47.5 percent of their shots from the field and 26.3 percent from behind the three-point line.

Langley and the Huskies have now won four games in a row and they’re doing pretty well for themselves lately. Washington also managed to recently take care of business against the Northwestern Wildcats. Those two conference wins are definitely solid and worth celebrating right now.
