Washington Huskies ran into issues on road, suffered stunning loss against Montana

Well, road trips aren't fun, apparently. Sunday afternoon, the Washington Huskies women's basketball team found out that Montana can be mean, apparently.

Well, it was highly unlikely that the Washington Huskies women’s basketball team was going to make it all the way through the entirety of the 2024-2025 women’s basketball season without suffering a single loss. Unfortunately, the Huskies found a way to suffer a pretty frustrating loss Sunday afternoon as they got off to a sluggish start and could not overcome a deficit on the road against Montana.

With a 14-point road loss against Montana, Washington now sits at 4-1 overall while the Grizzlies are sitting at 2-2 on the season.

Sunday afternoon wasn’t a great game for UW in really any significant way. Washington absolutely has to find a way to bounce back from this loss as the Huskies continue to get ready for Big Ten play, which will be here before we know it.

Washington Huskies women’s basketball stumbles on road against Montana Sunday afternoon

Washington was abysmal in several ways, but one that stands out is the issues shooting, especially from three-point range. The Huskies simply couldn’t buy a bucket. Washington managed to hit on just 35.5 percent of its shots Sunday and they made just two out of 14 three-point attempts.

If you want the math on that one, the Huskies made just 14.3 percent of their three pointers. In case you didn’t already know, that’s frighteningly bad. Just truly awful stuff.

Oh, and Montana managed to out rebound Washington by a margin of 42 to 33. That’s not exactly great either.

It is worth noting how the Huskies did do a better job of avoiding turnovers as Washington had just eight turnovers while the Grizzlies had 18. When it came to steals, UW had a dozen while Montana had just four. So, we’ve got that going for us.

Unfortunately, that didn’t translate to enough points for the Huskies.

And it’s frustrating because Washington was winning big at home. Prior to this deflating loss, the Huskies had no issues getting off to a 4-0 start. The Huskies were scoring over 88 points per game, managed to win their home games by an average of 35 points, and had beaten all of their opponents by over 20 points.

There was consistent dominance through that in addition to some really remarkable performances. And yet, here’s a road loss.

Washington will look to respond to this road loss by facing Cal State Fullerton on Thursday and then Prairie View A&M on Friday (with both of the games getting started at noon). The Huskies will get a couple of chances to get back on track this week and to address the issues that came up in this road loss. Here’s to hoping that they’ll make the most of these opportunities.
