The Washington Huskies weren’t exactly doing well in the Big Ten standings prior to their frustrating road loss to the Indiana Hoosiers, but Saturday’s disappointing results in Bloomington resulted in the Huskies stumbling a bit in the Big Ten standings.

Of course, it shouldn’t shock anyone that the Indiana Hoosiers remained unblemished. They’re unbeaten. And they currently sit atop of the Big Ten conference picture. That’s a pretty impressive feat. But it sure would’ve been nice had the Huskies found a way to spoil that perfection.

The Big Ten title picture has a few teams at the top vying for a shot at the conference championship game. Right now, Curt Cignetti’s Hoosiers and Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks both find themselves at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Big Ten play.

After that, the Penn State Nittany Lions are 7-0 overall and 4-0 against Big Ten competition. The Ohio State Buckeyes aren’t too far behind at 6-1 overall and 3-1 vs. Big Ten teams, but they’ve got some work to do if they want a real shot at competing for the conference championship this season.

Interestingly enough, the Illinois Fighting Illini, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Minnesota Golden Gophers, and Wisconsin Badgers all hold 3-2 conference records at this point.

Let’s take a gander at the Big Ten standings after week nine.

Big Ten football standings entering week 10

  • Indiana Hoosiers (8-0 overall, 5-0 Big Ten)
  • Oregon Ducks (8-0, 5-0)
  • Penn State Nittany Lions (7-0, 4-0)
  • Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1, 3-1)
  • Illinois Fighting Illini (6-2, 3-2)
  • Iowa Hawkeyes (5-3, 3-2)
  • Michigan Wolverines (5-3, 3-2)
  • Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-3, 3-2)
  • Wisconsin Badgers (5-3, 3-2)
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-3, 2-3)
  • Michigan State Spartans (4-4, 2-3)
  • Washington Huskies (4-4, 2-3)
  • USC Trojans (4-4, 2-4)
  • Maryland Terrapins (4-4, 1-4)
  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-4, 1-4)
  • Northwestern Wildcats (3-5, 1-4)
  • UCLA Bruins (2-5, 1-4)
  • Purdue Boilermakers (1-6, 0-4)

It’s frustrating to see the Washington Huskies so low on that list, but there is an opportunity for them to climb up a smidge this weekend when they host the USC Trojans, who have also struggled throughout the season. Of course, UW really needs a win here and then against the UCLA Bruins later down the line for Washington to become bowl eligible.

Washington will also get a few chances to play spoiler for some folks at the top as the Huskies have conference games remaining against the Penn State Nittany Lions and Oregon Ducks remaining.

Jedd Fisch and company have some chances to get this season to end on a high note, but Washington really can’t mess things up moving forward. There truly is no room for mistakes to be made at this point if this season isn’t going to end in total frustration for Washington Husky fans.
