The Washington Huskies softball team (10-7 overall) is currently enjoying a trip out to Hawaii to take part in the OUTRIGGER Invitational and so far everything is going really well for the Huskies. UW was able to start the trip with a solid win over the Jackson State Tigers (10-3 overall) thanks to some remarkable pitching efforts in the circle.

On Wednesday, Washington handed Jackson State a 4-1 result and that allowed the Huskies to improve to 10-7 on the season.

Of course, given the low score, it’s pretty clear that this was a pitchers duel. Washington’s Sophia Ramuno managed to throw a complete game that included 71 strikes thrown and she didn’t walk a single batter in the seven innings she was in the circle. Jackson State did manage to get a trio of hits against Ramuno, but that didn’t exactly come close to getting the Tigers a win here.

Now, Jackson State, to the Tigers’ credit, also had a pretty solid outing when it comes to pitching. The Tigers kept UW from doing too much damage as Sofia Gonzalez and Brooklyn Morris combined to allow just three earned runs in a combined six innings pitched.

Washington Huskies start the OUTRIGGER Invitational with a pitchers duel win vs. Jackson State

It’s worth noting that Jackson State, despite the loss, looked pretty solid. The Tigers certainly challenged the Huskies and managed to make things difficult at times for the Washington batters. UW will face the Tigers again this evening and the Huskies will need to ensure they play well throughout the entirety of the game.

Washington can’t just walk in and expect another win against the Tigers. Without Ramuno’s absolute dominance, we might be talking about a different result here. I mean, it’s not every day that you get a pitcher striking out 15 of the 21 batters that they face.

So, as UW gets set to continue on in the OUTRIGGER Invitational, hopefully we’ll see some more life at the plate for the Huskies in their next few games.
