The Sun Bowl is just about upon us and we’re about to get another look at what the Washington Huskies offense will look like with Demond Williams Jr. as the starting quarterback. The true freshman quarterback will have his shot to start against the Louisville Cardinals after ending the UW regular season as the starter against the Oregon Ducks.

The offense developed by Jedd Fisch and Brennan Carroll certainly didn’t seem to fit Will Rogers all that well. But, it does seem to work pretty decently with Williams as the signal caller. Given Williams’ mobility, Washington will be able to approach things a little differently than when Rogers was starting at quarterback.

And this could be a huge stepping stone for Williams as he moves forward as the starting quarterback for the Huskies. After all, he is pretty much expected to be the starting quarterback for Washington once we get to next season.

“Get hopefully another 70 plays under his belt,” Fisch said in a press conference. “The idea here would be able to continue to let him grow and develop, and then we have 252 days between the last game and the Colorado State game.”

Williams is young and has a very real chance to grow in this system. All of the bowl practices probably helped a bit in that regard and there’s no way that having more live snaps in a real game against another Power 4 team is a bad thing for his development at this point.

He’s played at times this season because Fisch and Carroll wanted to get him involved. He was a huge reason as to why the Huskies came out on top against the Michigan Wolverines and UCLA Bruins. And he looked pretty efficient against the Oregon Ducks (when he had time to pass, that is).

Now, Washington gets to focus on moving forward. This will propel the Huskies into the offseason.

“What we do in those 252 days will all be based upon how we play and what it looks like and give Demond every opportunity to showcase all of his skills,” Fisch said. “Then it's our responsibility as an offensive staff, now that we see that, to determine what he can do best."

It’s going to be real interesting to see Williams in action against Louisville. It’s also going to be real fun to see what the offense looks like once we finally get to that game against Colorado State to start next season.
