At 4-3 on the season so far, the Washington Huskies have seen a few ups and downs. And while the Huskies have demonstrated plenty of potential with the brand new coaching staff that’s in place and in the midst of its first season in Seattle, there has been a bit of frustration at times from fans who would like to see the Huskies reach their potential more frequently.

That’s especially true with regards to the offense.

Last season, Washington was thrilling and borderline unstoppable whenever the Huskies had the ball. They just flat out looked thrilling. And while Jedd Fisch, Brennan Carroll, and the Huskies have managed to put together a fairly productive offense this season, it just isn’t producing enough points to be unbeaten.

And now, as the Huskies head into their final handful of games, they’ll need to find plenty of ways to score to be able to shock a few folks and (hopefully) make it to a decent bowl game. Unfortunately, UW might have to do that with one of its stars being a little banged up.

During the weekly team press conference, Carroll was asked about if Jonah Coleman was fully healthy. And Carroll certainly shared what he is able to share on that.

Washington Huskies offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll opens up about if Jonah Coleman is injured

“When you’re getting all the carries, I think there’s just some bumps and bruises and stuff like that,” Carroll explained.

Which, you know, that would make some sense. We’re now entering into the ninth week of the 2024 Washington Husky football season and it’s been plenty physical through the first seven games on the Huskies’ schedule.

Teams like the Washington State Cougars, Northwestern Wildcats, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Michigan Wolverines, and Iowa Hawkeyes managed to give the Huskies a challenge in terms of playing UW in a tough and physical fashion.

So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the starting running back for a Big Ten team might be a little tired or worn down a bit at this point in the season.

As for how the Huskies are planning on approaching that issue, there doesn’t seem to be a major load management plan in place for this week (at least not one that Carroll is willing to talk about in a public forum), but it does sound like the Huskies are going to ensure their star running back is ready to go in this game.

“We’ll protect him a little bit. Dare I say ‘vet day,’ but we’ll take care of him, make sure he’s not, you know, overloading him in the beginning of the week so we can get him fresh for the weekend,” UW’s offensive coordinator said.

The Huskies are almost certainly going to need their starting running back ready to go in this one. There’s a nonzero chance UW has to get into a bit of a shootout with the Hoosiers if the Huskies hope to come out on top of this contest.

So, if Carroll and the Huskies can get Coleman a bit of rest, I’m all for it. Here’s to hoping that Coleman is ready to go in this Big Ten game though.
