Well, Eddie Smith and the Washington Huskies baseball team made things interesting for the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday. Unfortunately for UW baseball fans, “interesting” wasn’t exactly good enough to get a win against a fellow former member of the Pac-12.

Stanford was able to steadily overcome Washington’s explosive eight-run showing in the fourth inning as the Cardinal found a way to stay unbeaten, taking an 11-9 win away from the Washington Huskies on Saturday. Stanford now sits at 6-0 while the Huskies fell to 2-4.

Reilly McAdams drew the start for UW and managed to throw 94 pitches across five innings of work. McAdams did strike out five batters, but unfortunately he also allowed eight runs to Stanford. Gunnar Nichols was actually credited with the loss out of the bullpen as UW gave up a few runs down the stretch to lose this one.

Washington Husky baseball falls short against Stanford Cardinal even with UW’s remarkable eight-run scoring burst in the fourth inning

The Huskies did get going early and Sam DeCarlo was able to put a home run over the fence in his first at bat. But unfortunately, Stanford had an answer for that. Which, more or less, is the story of this game. Every time the Huskies had something exciting happen, Stanford had an answer.

UW’s eight-run fourth inning was thematically sandwiched in between a strong six-run third inning and then a four-run sixth inning for Stanford. There just wasn’t much that UW was able to do that Stanford couldn’t overcome.

For the Cardinal, Trevor Haskins managed to drive in four runs for Stanford, which included a three-run bomb in the third inning.

These two teams were able to match each other with a dozen hits each, but Stanford still was able to come away with the win and it should be noted that Washington stranded 10 runners on base while only six runners were left stranded for Stanford.

The four-game series between the two will continue on Sunday as they face off at 1:05 p.m. PT. Here’s to hoping that the Huskies can get going in the right direction. Right now, UW is on a two-game skid and it’d be nice to get a win to keep things from getting worse.
