Reliving the Washington Huskies’ 1000 yard rushing seasons: Greg Lewis, 1990

For the second time in his career, Greg Lewis managed to run for 1000 yards in a season when he put up a bunch of yards against a bunch of teams back in 1990. Interestingly enough, though, Lewis made Washington Husky history when he made Washington Husky history for a second time.

Because, with his remarkable 1990 season, Lewis became the first Husky to ever run for at least 1000 yards in a season on TWO different occasions. And the sequel was so much better than the first because he THRIVED against just about every defense he met.

Again, quick recap, Hugh McElhenny did this first in 1950, Rob Rowland in 1976, Joe Steele (great name) in 1978, Jacque Robinson (also great name) in 1984, and then Greg Lewis in 1989. Oh, yeah, and 1990. That’s all the instances (up to this point) of a Husky running for 1000 or more yards in a season.

And again, the second time Lewis did it was much better than the first.

Washington Husky football history: Greg Lewis was the first Washington Husky to have multiple 1000 yard rushing seasons

We’re talking about a year in which Lewis ran for nearly 130 rushing yards per game, scored eight touchdowns, and had 248 carries to get him to 1407 yards in the season. That’s just flat out phenomenal from Lewis.

Oh and we’re talking about a season in which Lewis helped lead Washington to a phenomenal 10-2 season that included wins over the No. 5 USC Trojans, No. 19 Oregon Ducks (a game in which Lewis ran for 169 yards), the No. 23 Arizona Wildcats, and No. 17 Iowa Hawkeyes in the Rose Bowl.

It was a pretty special season for just about everyone. Oh, and Lewis had those 1400+ rushing yards in a season that he actually didn’t get to play in the Apple Cup for. So, do with that knowledge what you will. This season could have been even more impressive for him.
