10. Iowa Hawkeyes

Last season: 8-5 (6-3 Big Ten)

Iowa has been a staple of consistency in the Big Ten for years now, even if they've tended to have a lower ceiling than the Ohio State's and Michigan's of the world. A true embodiment of the conference's identity, Iowa has been known for their gritty defense and ground-and-pound style of play.

Of course, the running joke has been that Iowa never has a good quarterback, and that it would be a miracle if the team put up more than 20 points against a top Big Ten team. However, the roles may be flipped this season. The defense and running game may take a step back this season, with transfer quarterback Mark Gronowski coming in to possibly be the best Iowa quarterback in decades.

11. Michigan State

Last season: 5-7 (3-6 Big Ten)

Jonathan Smith’s first season ended in a 5-7 record and no bowl appearance, a letdown for a fanbase eager for a turnaround. Smith’s reputation as a steady program builder suggests progress should come in year two, with a bowl game serving as the bare minimum expectation.

While another 5-7 campaign is possible, the Spartans should trend upward this season after a full recruiting and transfer portal cycle. Aidan Chiles is a gifted athlete at the quarterback position, and perhaps with more time to develop, he can be one of the best at the position in the Big Ten.

12. UCLA Bruins

Last season: 5-7 (3-6 Big Ten)

UCLA sits in the lower tiers heading into 2025, and expectations are mixed. On one hand, the Bruins are coming off a 5-7 season and could once again be more entertaining than competitive, especially with the spotlight on transfer quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

On the other hand, this team could make a true leap with all the weapons they have on offense: the Bruins best six players are at offensive skill positions. Still, UCLA feels like they're far from a complete team, especially on the defensive end.
