The Michigan Wolverines might be 4-1 on the season, but they certainly look like a flawed team this season. Ahead of the Washington Huskies’ week six matchup with the Michigan Wolverines, the Minnesota Golden Gophers happened to point out a few vulnerabilities that Michigan might have.

The Wolverines were able to build a sizable 21-3 halftime lead, but Sherrone Moore’s offense stalled in the second half and the Gophers managed to outscore Michigan 21-6 in the final two quarters of the game. Minnesota took advantage of multiple opportunities late and they came close to pulling off an incredible comeback upset in Ann Arbor.

It’s possible this had more to do with Michigan coming off a bit of a hangover from beating the USC Trojans the week prior, but for the Wolverines to win by just three points over a rather unimpressive Minnesota team is, well, unimpressive for the defending national champs.

The Wolverines are an incredibly one-dimensional team and that was evident on Saturday as Minnesota forced Michigan to beat them with a dilapidated offense. Time and time again, the Wolverines turned to Kalel Mullings to move the ball down the field and the talented running back had 24 carries for 111 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and a couple of touchdowns.

That’s not a bad game for the running back, but it’s not awe inspiring.

That said, it’s a heck of a lot better than Alex Orji, the Michigan quarterback who completed 10 of 18 pass attempts for 86 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. On the ground, Orji ran for 12 yards on nine carries.

The offense just didn’t look good, but to be completely honest, that’s been the case all season for Michigan. The Wolverines gained just 241 yards of offense in the win.

The Wolverines should truly be grateful for just how good their defense is because that side of the ball really made things challenging for Minnesota, who was also held under 300 yards of offense on the day. Golden Gophers QB Max Brosmer did complete 27 of his 40 attempts for 258 yards and a touchdown against an interception, but that wasn’t enough to get the win.

Now, theoretically speaking, it’s possible for Washington to replicate this sort of gameplan. Will Rogers has proven to be a solid quarterback and the Huskies have a stout defense. We’ll see if they’re able to pull off an upset on Saturday.
