No. 1: Washington State quarterback John Mateer

Mateer was phenomenal in the last game against Texas Tech on the ground. He ran absolutely crazy, literally as he amounted 197 yards on the ground on 21 carries. It's not that he just busted a long run to have that big day (though he did have an impressive 68 yard long run), he left to scramble or on a designed run 21 times. That is a QB that is comfortable using his legs.

Texas Tech did an amazing job of slowing his passing game down, as Mateer only went 9/19 and had an interception but if they couldn't stop his runs, they couldn't really stop him at all.

The wild thing about Mateer is that it's really the tale of two games. Look at his stats from each game:

Rushing
Texas Tech - 21 Carries 197 yards 9.4 average 1TD 68long run
Portland State - 2 Carries 55 yards 27.5 average 1TD 40long run

Passing
Texas Tech - 9/19 115yards 1TDS 1INT 63.0QBR
Portland State- 11/17 352yards 5TDs 0INT 99.1QBR

In the first game he was a passer, in the second game he was a rusher. Who will he be against the Dawgs?

It appears he will do whatever he has to do to get the offense moving. This is something to watch for, as he's an impact player and a guy that has enough competitive edge in him to find a way for his team to win.
