There’s no other way to put it, the Washington Huskies failed their road test last Friday. Their trip east to face off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights was infuriating in so many ways. Time and time again the Huskies committed errors that led to them suffering a narrow 21-18 loss in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Now, Washington sits at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play. Both of the Huskies’ losses so far could have (and arguably should have) been wins for Jedd Fisch and his team. This is a team that could be boasting an unblemished record ahead of hosting the Michigan Wolverines on Montlake. Instead, UW is going to struggle to make a bowl game this season.

That’s disappointing. While it has become more than evident that Fisch is being tasked with a complete rebuild, it’s frustrating because the Huskies could still be in the early stages of that complete rebuild all while holding on to a 5-0 record. Or a 4-1 record.

And yet, here we are at 3-2.

Will Rogers played a great game, especially once the Huskies started trusting him late in the game. Denzel Boston was dynamic. Jonah Coleman couldn’t be stopped. The Huskies held Rutgers under 300 yards of offense. And again, Washington is 3-2 instead of 4-1.

So, what should we make of that? What should we make of the fact that the Huskies fell flat and lost to a team they outgained by more than 200 yards?

Let’s start dishing out some grades.
