Washington Huskies hold decent spot in ESPN FPI rankings before road trip to Rutgers
By Ethan Lee
Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies are about to play in a place that’s pretty far from home, but it might help the Huskies get a bit of respect in their new conference and possibly around the college football scene. That’s because their new foe is actually better than what many expected.
As the Washington Husky football team gears up to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, they’re preparing to play in New Jersey, which, you know, is pretty far from home. And since they’ll be facing Rutgers, Washington is preparing to take on a Big Ten team that has overachieved in the eyes of many.
Right now, Rutgers is ranked at No. 46 in the latest ESPN FPI rankings. The Scarlet Knights are predicted to go 7.5-4.5 this season, according to ESPN’s FPI projections.
As for Washington, the Huskies aren’t in a bad spot themselves.
Washington Huskies sitting at No. 30 in latest FPI rankings before Big Ten road trip to Rutgers
Following Washington’s solid 24-5 win over the Northwestern Wildcats, the Huskies sit at 3-1 overall. And according to ESPN’s FPI, the Huskies are the No. 30 team in the country. That could be better and it could be worse. And this week’s road trip to Rutgers is a great chance to bolster the resume a little bit before a pretty big Big Ten game next week.
The Huskies have been averaging 456.5 yards of offense per game while their defense is holding foes to just 10.3 per game. But despite those pretty solid stats, FPI predicts that the Huskies will finish with just 6.3 wins. According to the stat projections, Washington has a 70.8 percent chance of getting to six wins this season.
This game against the Scarlet Knights will be a chance to suggest that the Huskies are capable of exceeding expectations. Should UW beat Rutgers, the Huskies would be two-thirds of the way to six wins with some intriguing and potentially winnable games against Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, USC, and UCLA up ahead.
We’ll see how it all actually plays out though.
