A ton of Washington Huskies football history is being made Saturday. The Jedd Fisch era will have its first game (and probably its first win). Washington will compete on the gridiron as a member of the Big Ten for the first time ever.
And also a first, the Huskies get to meet up with Weber State.
That’s right, for the first time in both of these football programs’ histories, the Washington Huskies and Weber State Wildcats will play each other. This has never happened before, and it will be happening Saturday evening at 8 p.m. as Fisch and his Huskies kick off the 2024 Washington Husky football season.
This probably isn’t the most monumental thing that anyone is going to discuss once the game is wrapped up, but it is a cool little anecdote that shouldn’t go unnoticed.
Washington Huskies set to face Weber State Wildcats for first time in history
There’s a ton of history to the Washington Huskies football program. We’re talking about one of the most storied programs college football has. This is a team with 774 wins, 20 bowl wins, 18 conference championships, seven Rose Bowl wins, two national championships, and 325 NFL draft picks.
And for the first time in program history, Washington will face Weber State.
It’s a funny thing to think about how an FCS program like Weber State is helping make a new moment in Washington Husky football history, but it’s technically a first for the Huskies to play the Wildcats. This is a brand new deal. It’s getting overshadowed by all of the other brand new things happening on Montlake right now, but this is still new.
Also, I should note that Weber State has a lot of pride in its accomplishments as well, as the Wildcats should. They compete in the Big Sky and have made it into the FCS playoffs 10 times. They’ve even managed to win the Big Sky eight times.
There’s a lot to be proud of there. And, technically speaking, the Washington Huskies are helping the Weber State Wildcats make history too.
