The Washington Huskies are absolutely facing an uphill battle against the Michigan Wolverines this weekend. Right now, Jedd Fisch and the Huskies are trying to bounce back after an awfully frustrating 21-18 road loss to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. But, with a national title game rematch against Michigan up ahead, the Huskies really can’t afford to dwell in this last loss.

They’ve got to bounce back this weekend if they’re going to salvage their season and make it to a bowl game this year.

Despite coming up short against Rutgers this past Saturday and losing to the Washington State Cougars in the Apple Cup a couple weeks ago, Washington might just have a chance this weekend. Of course, it’s all theoretical, but it’s certainly interesting that ESPN’s Football Power Index thinks Washington has a chance to upend the defending national champs when UW hosts Michigan in Seattle.

Right now, following Washington’s loss to Rutgers and ahead of the matchup with Michigan, the Huskies are actually favored by the ESPN FPI analytics matchup predictor tool.

That is just bizarre and fascinating.

ESPN’s FPI prediction favors Washington Huskies against the Michigan Wolverines in national championship rematch

At the moment, Washington is being given a 57.9 percent chance of beating Michigan. That just feels absolutely odd considering the Huskies’ two losses and the way the Michigan Wolverines have a dominant rushing attack and strong defense.

But hey, Michigan has looked pretty flawed this year.

That’s not to say that Washington is perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But, well, Michigan’s offense is one-dimensional as heck and the Wolverines really looked like a mess during the fourth quarters of their games against the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

Can Will Rogers and Denzel Boston and Giles Jackson generate a passing attack that takes advantage of some potential vulnerabilities in the secondary? Will Steve Belichick and the Huskies defense be able to halt the Wolverines’ rushing attack?

According to ESPN’s FPI, there’s a decent chance here. And if Washington can get this win, this season starts to look a bit better for Jedd Fisch and the Huskies.
