The Washington Huskies men's basketball team has found their new head coach in Utah State's Danny Sprinkle.
Despite the UW losing their athletic director Troy Dannen last week, they still managed to get the deal done. Dannen's last move as AD was to fire MBB coach Mike Hopkins. Since that move, Sprinkle’s name has been thrown around as the favorite to replace Hopkins and it looks like the Huskies were able to secure their guy despite a setback.
Unwrapping the Sweet Success: Danny Sprinkle Takes the Helm at Washington
Sprinkle, born in Pullman, Washington, played college basketball at Montana State from 1995-1999. He was the head coach there from 2019 to 2023 and appeared in the NCAA Division I tournament in his final two seasons with the team. He went 81-43 in five years at Montana State.
He then was named the head coach of Utah State before the start of last season, completely rebuilt the roster, and led the Aggie’s to a second round NCAA Division I appearance. They lost to No. 1 Purdue 106-67 and finished the year 27-6.
Sprinkle is inheriting a Husky team that is losing several key players like Keion Brooks Jr. and Sahvir Wheeler. While he’s rebuilt a roster from top to bottom before, Sprinkle's record against Power 6 teams is concerning as Washington transitions to the Big Ten conference.
His experience in reaching the NCAA Tournament is promising and it will surely be an exciting sight to see his recruiting power.
