Jonah Coleman showcased explosive potential for Washington Huskies vs. Rutgers
By Ethan Lee
Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies truly have a special running back in Jonah Coleman. The transfer star who followed Fisch and Brennan Carroll and so many other coaches from the Arizona Wildcats to the Washington Huskies demonstrated just how good he could be on Friday night on the road against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Unfortunately for the aforementioned Fisch and Carroll and Huskies and Coleman, the incredible and explosive rushing effort from the talented running back came in a tough 21-18 loss on Friday night. Still, if you were on the fence about understanding how good Coleman could be, he clearly showed he can be a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating game for the Huskies.
On Friday, Coleman showed just how special he could be early on and thrived throughout the game. With just 16 carries, the powerful running back ran for 148 yards. That’s good for 9.3 yards per carry, folks.
That’s incredible.
Washington Huskies running back Jonah Coleman thrived despite frustrating road loss to Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Coleman never made it into the end zone, but he displayed the sort of burst and speed that Washington fans have been wanting to see. At one point, as the Huskies were trying to get a comeback going, Coleman took off for a 35-yard run against a Rutgers rush defense that hadn’t really been gashed all that often.
That said, the Virginia Tech Hokies were able to find some weakness in Rutgers’ rush defense back in week three and Coleman and the Huskies did the same thing in week five.
Still, the loss drops Washington to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play. Coleman’s performance offers a little bit of a silver lining and it’s clear that there is something there that the Huskies can build upon as they move forward.
Especially if you can continue to get dominant passing attack performances from guys like Denzel Boston, whose presence almost certainly helped loosen up Rutgers’ run defense up front.
On the season, Coleman has run for 521 yards on just 72 carries (which equals out to 7.2 yards per carry). That’s the best yards per carry average that Coleman has put up throughout his career up to this point. He also has four rushing touchdowns, just one away from tying his career high in a season.
If Coleman can continue to play at the pace he’s at, he’s set to get 1250.4 rushing yards and 9.6 touchdowns this season. That’s pretty good.
