Jedd Fisch, Washington Huskies fall to 3-2 after stumbling vs. Rutgers
By Ethan Lee
Penalties and errors once again proved to be a bit of a problem for Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies. Washington, who had a chance to earn a bit of respect in the Big Ten as the Huskies took on a Rutgers team that legitimately deserves some recognition right now, fell flat on the road against the Scarlet Knights.
Washington happened to get flagged on six different penalties and ended up with a grand total of 69 penalty yards. Meanwhile, on the other sideline, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights were hit with just four penalties for 31 penalty yards.
That’s a problem. That disparity is a major problem.
It’s also a bit worrisome that Washington’s penalties contributed to stalled drives and a slightly dysfunctional offense. Oh, and it gave Rutgers additional opportunities. Washington has looked undisciplined all season and that continued on again tonight as the Huskies got humbled a bit on the road in Piscataway.
Washington Huskies come up short in mistake-filled game vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Kicker Grady Gross is going to get way too much heat for this game, but it is worth noting that he missed three field goal attempts in a game that was decided by three points. Now, that said, it’s concerning that the Huskies continue to struggle to routinely get into the end zone. And that, for a fact, is not something caused by Gross.
Washington also managed to struggle with executing in key moments of this game. The Huskies failed to convert on 4th-and-2 from the Rutgers’ 2-yard line in a moment that really could’ve gotten UW back into this game in a hurry in the third quarter.
Heck, Washington outgained Rutgers 521 yards to 299, but these mistakes placed a hard ceiling on what the Huskies were capable of. And so, the loss drops Washington to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 vs. Big Ten foes.
Now Washington and Fisch will return home to prepare for a matchup with the Michigan Wolverines in this coming weekend. No big deal, UW just happened to lose to a team that likes to run the ball, grind out the rushing attack, and get wins based on that methodology.
Michigan can do much of the same, but they’re just a lot more talented. No pressure, right?
