Big Ten standings, records entering week 5: Washington Huskies look to stay unbeaten in Big Ten play
By Ethan Lee
Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies took care of business back home in Seattle when they got Big Ten play started against the Northwestern Wildcats. Now, Fisch and Washington will be traveling all the way across the country for their first Big Ten road game of the season.
And, well, as it turns out, this will also be the Huskies’ first road game of 2024, period. While Washington has technically played outside of Husky Stadium once already this season, they haven’t hit the road and played in an opposing team’s stadium.
That changes this week as they travel to Rutgers to face the Scarlet Knights.
Following UW’s convincing 24-5 win over the Northwestern Wildcats, Jedd Fisch’s team sits in the midst of a six-team tie at the top of the Big Ten standings with a 1-0 record in conference play. It’s early, but the Huskies are looking to hold on to that top spot right now.
At the moment, the Illinois Fighting Illini, Indiana Hoosiers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, and Michigan State Spartans hold unblemished conference records at 1-0.

UW’s foe this week, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, have yet to face a Big Ten foe this season. That said, Greg Schiano’s team is unbeaten at 3-0 and they’ve actually looked really solid. Fisch and the Huskies will need to play clean football. They can’t really afford to make many mistakes this week if they want to get another Big Ten win.
Elsewhere in the conference, the Michigan Wolverines will meet up with the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a game that will likely be defined by some impressive rushing performances, strong defenses, and not a lot of points on the scoreboard.
The Maryland Terrapins and Indiana Hoosiers will face off in a game that features two of the more surprising Big Ten teams this season. Both have, more or less, surpassed what was expected of them for early season games.
The Illinois Fighting Illini have a real chance to make a real statement as they face the Penn State Nittany Lions in what will be a fascinating game to keep up with. Bret Bielema’s team has looked solid so far, but this will be their toughest test up to this point in the season.
