Washington Husky QB Will Rogers among Big Ten passing yards leaders after week 5
By Ethan Lee
There were plenty of questions about how Will Rogers would do in Seattle. And while the former Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback initially left Starkville to play for Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb, he seems to be doing okay for the Huskies under the leadership of Jedd Fisch and Brennan Carroll.
Heck, there were plenty of questions about Rogers’ arm strength and ability to play in a system other than the Air Raid. But, after five weeks of playing for Fisch, Carroll, and the Huskies, Rogers currently looks like one of the most productive quarterbacks in the Big Ten this season.
After five weeks, Rogers is very quietly among the Big Ten’s statistical leaders in passing yards this season. That’s not something that should get overlooked given how much has changed on Montlake (for Rogers and for the entirety of Washington Husky football) in the past nine months.
Big Ten passing yards leaders after week 5: Will Rogers ranks 3rd among Big Ten quarterbacks
The move from the SEC to the Pac-12 (for a brief moment) and into the Big Ten, playing in a new offense, a new head coach that differs from who Rogers initially signed up to play for, and Rogers has been pretty proficient in his performances.
So far, the seasoned quarterback has shown he can produce regularly. In total passing yards, Rogers currently trails only Billy Edwards Jr. for the Maryland Terrapins and Kurtis Rourke for the Indiana Hoosiers.
His 1354 passing yards are the third best in the Big Ten through five weeks of play. Here’s what the top five looks like for this category right now.
- Billy Edwards Jr. (Maryland Terrapins): 1,444 yards
- Kurtis Rourke (Indiana Hoosiers): 1,372 yards
- Will Rogers (Washington Huskies): 1,354 yards
- Dylan Raiola (Nebraska Cornhuskers): 1,224 yards
- Miller Moss (USC Trojans): 1,198 yards
Now, not everyone has played five games, but Rogers looks pretty good and he seems pretty comfortable with what Carroll and Fisch and the Huskies are trying to do on offense. Against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Rogers demonstrated that he can truly operate this offense well.
The Huskies will need their veteran quarterback to play up to his full potential this season. So far, it seems like he can do that. Let’s see just how high his ceiling is in this offense and with this team.
