Will Rogers among Big Ten passing leaders in touchdowns thrown through week 5
By Ethan Lee
Will Rogers hasn’t exactly grabbed a ton of attention nationally for what he’s accomplishing in Seattle this season, but the former Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback is currently thriving by efficiently picking apart defenses for the Washington Huskies.
As the Washington Huskies get settled into the Big Ten, Rogers is having a pretty decent time of playing well in his new conference and for his new team. Through five weeks of the 2024 Washington Husky football season, Rogers has managed to throw 10 touchdown passes.
As it stands right now, that’s good for fourth in the conference. Given all of the doubts that folks have had about the former Air Raid quarterback’s ability to succeed in an offense that differed from what Mike Leach ran with the Bulldogs, it’s worth celebrating how Rogers is doing with this new offense.
Also, it’s worth acknowledging how Rogers is playing better than many expected when considering the context of how much the Huskies have had to learn and gel with one another this season.
This is a new team in so many ways as Jedd Fisch has overhauled the roster after Kalen DeBoer left for Alabama. And the starting quarterback for the Huskies is currently doing pretty well even in those circumstances.
Big Ten passing leaders: Will Rogers ranks at No. 4 in touchdowns thrown through week 5
Here’s how Rogers stands amongst the current leaders in passing touchdowns in the Big Ten:
- Billy Edwards Jr. (Maryland Terrapins) - 11 touchdowns
- Kurtis Rourke (Indiana Hoosiers) - 11 touchdowns
- Luke Altmyer (Illinois Fighting Illini) - 11 touchdowns
- Will Rogers (Washington Huskies) - 10 touchdowns
- Dylan Raiola (Nebraska Cornhuskers) - nine touchdowns
Now, not every Big Ten team has played five games, but all five of the top five quarterbacks on this list have. Also, Rogers is the only quarterback in this grouping to not have thrown an interception up to this point in the season. On top of that, his completion percentage is higher at 74.8 percent.
Rogers is doing well. He’s completing passes, throwing for a solid amount of yards, and scoring touchdowns. You can't really ask for too much more.
