No. 1: Washington Huskies vs. Northwestern Wildcats (week 4)

The Huskies’ path to becoming bowl eligible starts this week as their best opportunity for a win comes in Washington’s first Big Ten conference game against the Northwestern Wildcats. Washington gets to play a team with a rather ineffective offense at home in Husky Stadium.

As a whole, there’s a notable talent gap between these two teams. While it’s true that Washington isn’t what it was a season ago, Northwestern hasn’t looked sharp to get this season started. The Wildcats scored just 13 points in a close win over Miami (Ohio) to start the season, lost to an uninspiring Duke Blue Devils team in week two, and then struggled to put points on the board against Eastern Illinois.

For the most part, the Huskies have looked better to start this season.

Northwestern is averaging 355.3 yards of offense per game to get this season underway. Washington, meanwhile, has averaged 478.3 total yards of offense through the Huskies’ first three games of the season.

On the defensive side of things, the two teams are pretty close. UW has held foes to 12 points per game while Northwestern has allowed just 13 points per game. Opponents have gained an average of 279.3 yards of offense against Washington’s defense while they’ve gained an average of 272.3 yards of offense against Northwestern.

There’s a chance this is a low scoring affair, but Washington does seem capable of coming out on top. When looking at ESPN’s Football Power Index and ESPN’s matchup predictor tool, the Huskies have an 84.2 percent chance of coming out on top in this game.

And getting a win to start Big Ten play would be a great way to bounce back after that Apple Cup loss. Jedd Fisch and his coaching staff should make it clear how important this game is for the remainder of this season.
