3 big questions from Washington Huskies’ frustrating Apple Cup loss to Wazzu
By Ethan Lee
No. 3: Will the Huskies be interested in running the ball more regularly moving forward?
Will Rogers and the Washington Huskies really did well by developing a solid passing attack. The Huskies have Will Rogers to thank for 314 passing yards and a touchdown pass. In fact, that was UW’s only touchdown on Saturday, which is not exactly great. But that’s not really Rogers’ fault.
While Rogers was throwing for 314 yards, the Huskies really didn’t commit to running the ball all that much in the Apple Cup. In total, Washington managed just 126 rushing yards and failed to score a touchdown by running the ball.
That’s a big difference from what the Huskies were doing in the running game in the first couple weeks of the 2024 Washington Husky football season. And while I appreciate what Rogers was able to accomplish (I’m a huge fan of pass happy offenses, for what that’s worth), it’s concerning that Jonah Coleman only had 14 carries (on which he ended up gaining 75 yards).
The lack of production there is a bit worrisome. The seeming lack of committing to utilizing one of the most talented running backs in the country is a bit worrisome. The whole deal is also pretty odd considering that Coleman had over 100 rushing yards in each of the first two games of the season.
We’ll see how the Huskies move forward from this frustrating loss. Here’s to hoping that they get these questions answered sooner rather than later. Big Ten play is coming soon and the Huskies will have plenty of tough teams up ahead.
