The start of the 2024 Washington Huskies football season (and the dawn of a couple different aspects of a new era for Washington football) is just hours away as the Huskies bring Weber State to Seattle. And with the start of a new Washington Huskies football season, Washington Huskies football fans get a brand new depth chart to analyze.

The Huskies are heading into the Big Ten and their first game as a Big Ten team is this evening. Plus, there’s a brand new head coach in Seattle. So, as Jedd Fisch and his coaching staff lead the Huskies into their new conference, let’s go ahead and start looking at the way the Huskies’ roster looks this season.

We’ll take a look at Washington’s secondary, focusing on the nickel and safety positions. Under new defensive coordinator Steve Belichick (yes, he’s the son of that one legendary NFL coach with the same last name and also a former New England Patriots assistant), the Washington Huskies will run a 4-2-5 defense.

That makes this batch of players pretty important for the Huskies this season.

At safety, the Huskies get to showcase a mix of experienced players as well as some promising newcomers. Kamren Fabiculanan fits into the former category and he’s currently slated to get a start at safety for the Huskies. Fabiculanan is now in his sixth season with the Huskies and played in 12 of the 15 games last year.

There’s a competition going on for the other starting safety spot and Makell Esteen and Cameron Broussard are vying for it.

Esteen has been at Washington for a while and is headed into his fifth season with the Huskies and got the chance to play in 15 games last season. Meanwhile, Broussard is new to Seattle and transferred in after spending four seasons at Sacramento State.

Over at nickel, redshirt freshman Jordan Shaw is slated as Washington’s starter. Shaw is new to Washington after spending his redshirt season with the Indiana Hoosiers.
