Washington Husky fans, we’ve got the opportunity to do a bit of good and serve a fellow Husky as she takes on a fight against a rare form of cancer.
It’s only been a few days since it started to become public knowledge that one UW soccer star is battling a rare form of cancer, but the Washington Husky community has very quickly responded by rallying around her and is supporting her fight.
UW’s Mia Hamant, the junior goalkeeper for the Washington Husky women’s soccer team, is facing a fight against an extremely rare and aggressive cancer. According to the GoFundMe that has been set up to support her, Hamant has been diagnosed with Stage 4 SMARCB1-deficient kidney cancer, which just flat out sounds intimidating.
As the GoFundMe points out, this form of cancer can grow “rapidly and spread throughout the body. Mia’s condition is so rare that many medical facilities may only see a single case per year.”
Which, admittedly, that's a lot for anyone to deal with. However, it's more than clear that Hamant is not going through all of this on her own. Washington Husky fans (and the UW community as a whole) are showing up in a huge way.
Washington Huskies rally around Mia Hamant as UW soccer star battles rare stage 4 cancer
All across the UW athletics department, the Huskies are showing up in support of Hamant, spreading the news of what she’s currently going through and providing reminders that she’s not alone in this fight.
Oh! Hey, you can also buy these really cool kits to help support Mia. They're named after her. She designed them. That rocks.
Heck, folks on the other side of the country are joining in and supporting Mia in her fight.
And for the Washington Husky fans who are interested in doing what they can to support Hamant in her fight, it appears the best way for UW fans to do that is to go through the GoFundMe page rather than trying to directly reach out to her or her family.
As they note, giving the Hamant family space and the opportunity to read through messages of support on the GoFundMe is helpful.
They also noted that they appreciate the shares of the GoFundMe as well as the prayers and support expressed through all of this. Again, UW fans, we’ve got the chance to do some good here. Let’s do that.
