It really is cool to see Rome Odunze’s name all throughout the Washington Husky football record book. The dude accomplished so much for the Huskies in such an intense and brief period of time. It really was a two year burst of offensive firepower that he was a part of and it’s weird to think about how it was that brief of a slice of time.
Interestingly enough though, in both of the seasons that Odunze got to play alongside Michael Penix Jr. and for Ryan Grubb and Kalen DeBoer, the star receiver managed to record over 1000 yards receiving for the Washington Huskies. That group was really good when working together and it’s a shame that it was only for such a brief period.
But in the first year of Odunze’s time in that offense and system, he managed to make a considerably large impact on the Huskies. He recorded 75 receptions for a grand total of 1,145 yards (which averages out to be 15.3 yards per reception) and he caught seven touchdown passes.
Washington Husky football history: Rome Odunze was borderline impossible to stop in 2022
Odunze also averaged 95.4 receiving yards per game, over a half dozen catches per game, and (of course) this was his first of two seasons in which he racked up over 1000 receiving yards in a season. He was pretty good as a sophomore in this system.
During the 2022 season, Odunze recorded a half dozen games in which he had over 100 yards receiving and managed to have four of those in a row. Against the Stanford Cardinal, he had 161 yards receiving, 157 yards against the Washington State Cougars, 116 vs. the UCLA Bruins, and then 102 yards against the Oregon State Beavers.
It really is impressive to see how much Odunze improved year over year from 2021 to 2022 (this offensive improvement across the board certainly helped) and it really is impressive to see the leaps and improvements he made into 2023.
