‘Just got to make some of those plays’: Jedd Fisch addresses Washington Huskies offensive inconsistencies
By Ethan Lee
Washington Husky fans aren’t the only ones who are dissatisfied with the way the Huskies’ offense has struggled to score at times. Following last Saturday’s loss to the Indiana Hoosiers, Jedd Fisch noted that UW has been having plenty of internal dialogue on the issues the Huskies have been having when it comes to scoring.
Now, it’s worth noting that Brennan Carroll and Fisch have been able to design an offense that can move the ball up and down the field. But when said offense gets within the red zone and fails to come away with points, there’s a problem that is present.
So far this season, Washington is 24 for 31 when it comes to scoring on red zone attempts. When it comes to scoring touchdowns, the Huskies are just 16 for 31 on the season. That’s not very good for a team that has some decent potential.
And the Huskies are aware that they’re not capitalizing on all of their potential scoring opportunities and that something should subsequently change.
In his postgame press conference, Fisch was asked about a remark that Jonah Coleman made regarding how the offense needs to do better at finishing on drives moving forward. And Fisch provided some decent insight into that.
Jedd Fisch discusses Washington Huskies’ struggles with scoring on offense
“Yeah, well, I think what he was saying is that we talked at halftime that we had four possessions inside the 40 and we had three of which we didn't get any points,” Fisch noted. “One of which we threw a pick six, one of which we got stopped on a fourth-and-one, and one of which we wound up getting stopped short on a scramble on fourth-and-three.”
The head coach of the Huskies continued to explain more on the matter, including providing an inside look into the internal conversations that Washington has been having about the offensive issues.
“So what he's referring to is that when you have four possessions inside the opponent's 40 you’ve got to make some of those plays, you just gotta make some of those plays,” Fisch said.
And then he provided a few more tangible examples on things the Huskies have to do better when it comes to executing on plays.
“We've got to find a way, when you're scrambling forward for three yards you get the first down, you don't cut it back. When it's third-and-one or fourth-and-one, that Jonah needed to take on number 24 in that situation,” Fisch stated.
Washington has some work to do. This season isn’t over yet. Two more wins for the Huskies and Washington gets a chance to go bowling. Anything beyond that means that there’s a pretty dang good chance that UW would have spoiled someone’s season. And it would be nice to see that happen this year.
