The Denver Broncos have added another running back to their stable in the fourth round by selecting Jonah Coleman from the Washington Huskies. Coleman is the first running back drafted out of Washington since Myles Gaskin in 2019, and he's got the ability to really shine in the NFL. Pundits have been talking about his NFL upside since 2023, when he went off for the Arizona Wildcats.
However, one name slipped out of the lips of NFL Draft expert Jordan Schultz (yeah, that one...), and it was Maurice Jones-Drew. That comparison is about as elite as you can get for Coleman, but it's also probably spot on.
Jonah Coleman was being compared to Maurice Jones-Drew during the pre-draft process. Legit bowling ball very tough to bring down. 🎳 https://t.co/JqXsP87hBc

Jonah Coleman is getting compared to Maurice Jones-Drew and to a bowling ball

Coleman's running style is very similar to Jones-Drew in the sense that neither is easy to bring down and is often referred to as a "bowling ball". In fact, it wasn't just Schultz who gave the bowling ball comparison; another draft commenter used the exact same phrase.
It's a good fit for Coleman as he also excels in the short-passing game. The Broncos love to use their running backs in the quick and intermediate passing attack, especially when they have their alternate or backup running back in. No. 2 running back RJ Harvey was fifth on the team in receiving yards last season with 356 yards. He was fourth in receptions with 47.
Coleman could easily slide into that spot and be a solid backup to JK Dobbins, who's also known to struggle with injuries. So there may even be a need for him sooner than later.
Coleman rushed for 758 yards last season with a 4.9-yard average and recorded 15 rushing touchdowns. He also had 31 receptions for 354 yards and two more receiving touchdowns. He brings a lot of pedigree to the Denver Broncos backfield, and if he is even close to Maurice Jones-Drew, all Broncos fans will be thrilled.
