Jedd Fisch is hosting another big-bodied receiver and needs to close the deal

The Huskies already have struck out with multiple wide receiver targets this offseason

Washington head coach Jedd Fisch stood at the podium for his first press conference of the offseason on Wednesday. There, he gave a surprisingly sharp rebuke of the transfer portal, from which 19 former Huskies have departed in the last two weeks.

Fisch, who on Wednesday had only added nine players in response, made it clear that he’s not the kind of coach to make waves in the portal.

“I do not and will not subscribe to trying to build a football team through free agency,” Fisch said. “Some people can do that. Good for them. That is not us. We are going to bring in players, develop them, and see how good they can get.”

Fisch, who voiced support for last year’s starters at positions like safety, linebacker, and offensive line, acknowledged the necessity of Washington’s signings at cornerback and defensive line. However, he also noted that his Huskies have yet to fix one major position of need.

Washington to host former Elon receiver Isaiah Fuhrmann for a visit

The Huskies, who recently lost wideout Denzel Boston to the NFL Draft and three young receivers to the transfer portal, are in need of serious help out wide.

“Obviously we’re staying very active looking at the receiver position, and continuing to work there,” Fisch said on Wednesday.

Evidently, some of that portal activity has centered around former Elon receiver Isaiah Fuhrmann, as the rising junior has scheduled a visit with the Huskies.

Fuhrmann, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 192 pounds, spent the last two years with the Elon Phoenix. As a sophomore in 2025, he tallied 46 catches for 906 yards and nine touchdowns, leading the team in all three categories. Check out his season long, a 96-yard game winner against Campbell:

Fuhrmann may not have experience against the best competition, but his long frame and deep-ball ability have certainly turned some analysts’ heads. 247Sports ranks Fuhrmann the No. 24 available portal receiver, but On3 lists him as one of only four available receivers with a transfer grade of 88 or better.

When you turn on Fuhrmann’s highlights, it’s easy to see On3’s thinking. It’s also easy to see why Washington wants him: He’s got the physical potential to replace Boston as UW’s primary deep-ball weapon. Just look at this 76-yard touchdown, which he pulled in despite double coverage from North Carolina A&T:

If that’s not impressive enough, take a look at this nine-yard score against Rhode Island, where Fuhrmann extends through even tighter two-man coverage to make the catch:

However, there’s no guarantee Fuhrmann decides to become a Husky. He’s scheduled to meet with Georgia Tech before visiting Montlake, and On3’s Rivals gives both schools a near-equal chance of landing a commitment.

If Fisch wants to make the most of quarterback Demond Williams Jr.’s junior season, he should consider making an all-out push for Fuhrmann. The Huskies are extremely thin at receiver behind rising sophomore Dezmen Roebuck, and things won’t improve until they finally hit on a transferring wideout.

Washington has already missed on several receivers in the transfer portal

Jedd Fisch has already pursued a few big names in this year’s class of transferring wide receivers, but he’s yet to land any of his targets. Washington previously targeted Syracuse’s Darrell Gill Jr. and Florida’s Naeshaun Montgomery without success.

Like Fuhrmann, Gill Jr. was a sought-after portal prospect due to his size and downfield capabilities. However, Gill Jr. chose Ole Miss over Washington on Thursday.

Montgomery, who redshirted at Florida in 2025, took an official visit to UW as a recruit last fall. He scheduled another visit with Washington after entering the transfer portal, but committed to Missouri on Jan. 10.

Washington is also still in contention for rising junior Zion Kearney, who is leaving Oklahoma via the portal. 247Sports’ Chris Hummer reported yesterday that the former Sooner is working to set up visits with Washington and two other schools:

A visit with Washington could change things, but Rivals is currently predicting Baylor and Iowa State to be the only two schools with a chance of landing Kearney. With options beginning to dwindle, Fisch and company would be wise to send the house after Fuhrmann.
