There’s a lot of history in El Paso, Texas. That’s true in a sense of geography and discussing life, but it’s also true when talking about college football. And the Washington Huskies get the distinct honor of travelling to El Paso to partake in one of the oldest bowl games in all of college football. It happens to be the Sun Bowl.
As the 2024 Washington Huskies football season winds down, it’s hardly going to be one that is remembered as fondly as the historic sort of life-giving season that was the magical 2023 UW football season.
But Jedd Fisch and the Huskies can end the year on a high note with a historic bowl game. And of course, with all that has happened to Fisch and the Washington football program over the past 12 months, ending this chaotic year on a high note in a historic bowl game would be actually kind of a cool thing.
“We had no idea what our team was going to look like in January, in April, and in June, and for us to go out there and get to a point where we're playing in a bowl game, that's something that we're very proud of, " Fisch said in a press conference.
Washington Huskies, Jedd Fich getting set for 2024 Sun Bowl against Louisville Cardinals
The Huskies have seen all sorts of roster changes and personnel changes and this team is very different from what it was a season ago. But at the end of the day, UW still wants to support its athletes at the highest possible level, perform well, and win games.
And that can happen in El Paso.
“We want this to be a championship game for our guys,” Fisch explained.
Which, if you go back to what the bowl games used to be, that’s a great thing for Fisch and this coaching staff to be emphasizing.
“I told our team today at our banquet that we were playing the Sun Bowl Championship game and our goal is to go out there and win the championship,” UW’s head coach continued.
As the Huskies get set to take on the Louisville Cardinals, they’ll meet up with an 8-4 team that has shown on a couple occasions that it can contend with some of the best in the country. And of course, Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals also want to end this season with a win.
So, here’s to hoping that Fisch’s first trip to El Paso is fun for ALMOST everyone that makes the trip.
“We're excited about going to the second-oldest bowl game,” Fisch said. “I've never been to the Sun Bowl, so there's a new bowl game on my checklist, and we are going to make it a fantastic experience for our team.”
As a fan of El Paso and a fan of the way college football is quirky and has weird history with the bowl games, I'm a huge fan of the way Fisch is approaching all of this. I love that he's putting an emphasis on the bowl with this team. Especially when considering everything that the Huskies have seen change this year.
