One of the big needs for the Washington Huskies this offseason was a better punter. It's sad that that's the truth, but it is. Last season, the Huskies had a ton of terrible punts, and the season ended, and the punt average was 34.6 yards per punt. That's really poor, like bottom of the FBS in punting, bad.
Jedd Fisch has fixed that issue with one portal addition, signing Hunter Green from San Diego State, who was one of the best punters in college football. He averages 47.7 yards per punt. That's among the elite punters in college football. Husky fans hilariously react to this signing.
Thank god! Would rather pour molten glass into my eyes than watch the guy from last year.

Does that say 47.7 yards per punt? pic.twitter.com/eQDB0OPHvP

Hunter Green is actually a legacy player for Washington and he's back home

Green grew up in Redmond and played at Lake Washington High School. According to the Seattle Times, "His father, Phil Green, was a walk-on kicker and defensive back for the Huskies, earning a letter in 1992."
Not only did Washington get one of the best punters in the nation, but they also got a legacy player who will be able to use his final year of eligibility kicking for the same school his dad played for and helping the Huskies become elite in flipping the field position.
Husky fans are thrilled to have a punter who can actually help the team, not one who shanks it out of bounds after about 20 yards or can't keep it inside the 20. According to Nick Lemkau, Green downed 30 of his 62 punts inside the 20-yard line in 2025, which is huge and ranks in the top 5 in all of the FBS.
While adding a punter is not the sexy pickup, it is when you've been among the worst at it and had to watch it be terrible all season. Now, that part of the game has been fixed via the transfer portal and a legacy recruit.
